Nyamira Girls will be going for the East African hockey title at the 21st edition of the East Africa School Sports Championships, set to take place from August 16 to 27 in Bukedea, Uganda.
The defending champions are undeterred despite losing 2-1 to
rivals Tigoi Girls in the nationals final, with Head Coach Stephen Kigai
promising renewed zest and zeal as they fly Kenya’s flag in Uganda.
The coach knows the opposition from the local rivals is not to
be underestimated at the international stage, but is buoyed by their experience
at the level, entering the competition as the defending champions.
"Being the
defending East African Champions, we have done everything to ensure that the
girls are fully prepared for the upcoming championship. We utilized the entire
Second Term in intensive preparations, including numerous friendly matches
against experienced clubs to sharpen our skills," he explained.
In addition
to physical training, the team has focused on mental preparations, according to Kigai.
"We
have arranged for special coaching sessions to help the girls keep mental sharpness,
and with the extensive preparations, we are confident that the team is ready
for the big stage.
“We are committed
to bringing the trophy back home, so we assure our supporters that we will put
forth our best effort,” Kigai added.
Last year,
Nyamira Girls claimed the championship with a 2-0 victory over the 2022
champions, Kakunglu Memorial Secondary School of Uganda.
