KHU: Strathmore win hockey Premier League title
Grace Bwire hit four as Strathmore University thrashed United
States International University (USIU) 4-2 to capture the Kenya Hockey Union
Women’s Premier League title on Saturday.
The result at City Park saw Strathmore secure the
championship with two games to spare.
There was no stopping Bwire on the day as she single-handedly
sunk USIU with Naomi Kemunto and Beatrice Mbugua scoring the consolation goals.
Strathmore took the lead just seven minutes into the game when
Bwire struck the opener but Kemunto restored parity moments later.
Bwire got on the mark on the mark again to beat goalkeeper Fiona
Makena with a quick-fire double in the 25th and 34th minutes.
Mbugua converted a flick in the dying minutes of the third
quarter but USIU’s hopes for a comeback were vanquished later on as Bwire
struck again.
USIU head coach John Kabu made several changes to clutch and
improve his side’s defense and striking respectively but all were on deaf
efforts.
Elsewhere in Kisumu, Lakers and Blazers shared goalless
spoils at Simba club, in another women's premier league.
The results maintain them second and third on log with 18 and
17 points respectively.
