Kenya’s U23 wheelchair basketball team gear up for World Cup qualifiers
The national under-23 men's basketball wheelchair team is gearing
up to compete in the World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for February 3-13, 2025, at
the Mandeville Sports Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The 12-member team has been intensifying its
training sessions at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in preparation for the historic
tournament.
This marks the first time the team will participate
at a World Championship event, an opportunity earned through consistent
performances and their status as one of the top teams in the region.
“We are thrilled to be part of the inaugural World
Championship. Our inclusion is a testament to our consistency and standing as
one of the best teams in this region,” said Alfred Simiyu, the head of the
Kenya Wheelchair Basketball Federation (KWBF).
Under the guidance of coach Maurice Ouma, the team
has seen significant improvements, boosted by the inclusion of new players. The
squad is determined to make a strong impression on the international stage.
“In the past, we attended competitions without
proper training camps, calling players directly from home to compete. This
time, we’ve had the chance to train together, which has strengthened our
cohesion and boosted our confidence. We believe we can make history,” coach
Ouma stated.
Player Steve Mwendwa shared the team’s optimism, saying: “We are hopeful of achieving better results this time. Our training has been intense, and we’ve worked on improving our skills to match international standards. We aim to avoid past humiliations and make the country proud.”
Otieno Odendo, another team member, echoed similar
sentiments, noting: “The coaches have introduced us to new techniques that have
elevated our performance. We are confident in our abilities heading into the
qualifiers.”
The team’s goal is not only to perform well in
Johannesburg but also to secure a spot in the World Cup, which will take place
later this year in São Paulo, Brazil.
