Kenyan hockey teams hand out walkovers after travel delay
The national
five-a-side field hockey team handed out a walkeover after failing to honor the
opening match at the ongoing 2024 World Cup qualifier games in Ismailia, Egypt.
The men and
women sides had been scheduled to play against Nigeria and Zambia on Saturday
but had to forfeit those games due to travel delay.
Kenya had
attempted to have the games postponed through a letter from Kenya Hockey Union
(KHU) president Nahashon Randiek who is in Egypt on officiating assignments.
But that
request was turned down, according to the KHU Secretary General Wycliffe Ongori
who spoke to Citizen Digital.
Ongori indicated the Kenyan squad would travel
later Saturday night.
”We were
waiting for a green light letter from the immigration office which has delayed
our travelling. But the squad shall jet out today at around quarter to midnight,”
the official said.
The six-day
event will see the first three countries proceed to Muscat, Oman in January
2024, to represent Africa in the five-a-side World Cup.
