Kenyan grandmothers chase glory at global football tournament

What began as a simple community fitness initiative has evolved into a movement redefining sports and wellness among older women.
Recognizing their remarkable journey, the Kenyan government has stepped in to sponsor the team, ensuring their smooth participation in the global tournament.
Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum and Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii have pledged full support for the team, aligning with President William Ruto’s BETA agenda, which prioritizes sports as a catalyst for social and economic transformation.
“Mutei Grannies FC’s story is an inspiration to all generations. True champions are measured not by age but by heart. Congratulations, and continue inspiring the next generation of athletes. As the team prepares for South Africa, the government remains committed to facilitating their journey,” said Sports PS Peter Tum.
The 22-player squad, accompanied by eight officials, includes 75-year-old Rebecca Cheboi, the team’s oldest player during the ceremony.
Beyond football, the team has made a profound impact in Elgeyo Marakwet. Since its founding last year, Mutei Grannies FC has helped members overcome vices like alcoholism, strengthened community bonds, and empowered older women to lead healthier, more engaged lives. Their story has captured national attention, proving that passion and resilience transcend age.
As they step onto the international stage, these grandmothers are not just playing football, they are making history.
