Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipsang dies in the US

Kipsang, who was living and training in the USA, passed away on Tuesday while receiving treatment at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, in the State of Washington.

In 2022, Kipsang set the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) 1500m record with his 3minutes 33.74 seconds run at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

His record stood until earlier this year, when it was lowered by Villanova’s Liam Murphy.

He was the NCAA DI indoor mile runner-up and the outdoor 1500m East Region champion in 2021 and also placed fourth at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championship.

Kipsang suffered cardiac arrest on Friday, June 6 according to a Go Fund Me set to support Kipsang's repatriation and funeral expenses.

“On Friday, June 6th, 2025, Eliud suffered cardiac arrest and was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, WA, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Despite the tireless efforts of doctors and nurses, he tragically passed away on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025.”

Kipsang enjoyed a standout career while at the University of Alabama.
