By Basil Ogembo
Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) has unveiled the final roster for the highly
anticipated FIBA Afrobasket Women Qualifiers set to take place in Cairo, Egypt,
from February 3-8, 2025.
This
meticulously selected team blends exuberant young talent with seasoned
veterans, ready to fiercely compete for the prestigious sole qualification spot
available for the continental championship.
This
year's squad shines with emerging stars like Ashley Minayo (Zetech Sparks), Elizabeth
Okumu (Equity Hawks) and Margaret Nereah (Strathmore Swords). These players
have excelled during training sessions, captivating coaches with their skills
and determination, ultimately securing their places in the national team.
Minayo,
a dynamic shooting guard known for her precision and agility, expressed her
excitement about this opportunity.
“I
am truly honored to represent my country. The hard work I’ve put in culminates
here, and I am ready to give my all,” she shared, embodying the spirit of
dedication.
Okumu,
the younger sister of captain Celine Okumu, is celebrated for her relentless
defense and strategic acumen. She eagerly anticipates learning from her more experienced
teammates.
“Being
part of this team is a dream come true. I am excited to learn from the best and
contribute, and I am grateful to be led by my elder sister, who inspires me,”
she stated, reflecting the team’s determination.
The
experienced players, led by Natalie Akinyi, Mercy Wanyama, Belinda Okoth, and
Vilma Owino, bring invaluable leadership and insight.
Wanyama,
a standout in the professional league in Lithuania, emphasized the power of
unity. “We have an incredible blend of players. If we stay focused and work
together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve,” she affirmed, instilling
confidence within the group.
Under
the guidance of Head Coach George Mayienga, alongside Sylvia Kamau, the team
has committed to rigorous preparation. Training has been underway at Nyayo
National Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Complex since January 10, culminating in a
focused residential camp at Kasarani.
As Kenya prepares to face formidable opponents including Egypt, Uganda, Burundi, and South Sudan, with only one team earning a coveted spot at the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket 2025 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the players are set to depart for Cairo tonight.
