Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania collaborate on security ahead of AFCON 2027

As Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania prepare to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), there is an increasing need for collaboration and capacity building among local stakeholders, security experts, and international partners.
In line with this, Kenya's National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) has partnered with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism under its global program on the security of major sporting events.
"Major sporting events play a significant role in empowering communities, including engaging underprivileged individuals," said Alex Tumushabe, Director of Planning and Policy at Uganda’s National Counter-Terrorism Centre, during a workshop held to address security concerns ahead of the tournament.
"East Africa is rich in sports heritage, and this workshop is vital for uniting stakeholders to share knowledge and insights," Tumushabe added.
Major sporting events are widely recognized as platforms for fostering social cohesion, promoting peace, and countering violent extremism. However, the growing threat of terrorism poses significant challenges.
"In 2023, 68% of terrorist attacks resulted in over 15,000 fatalities. By November 30, nearly 4,000 terrorist incidents had been recorded globally," noted Richard Apau, a systems analyst with the African Union Counter-Terrorism Centre (AUCTC).
"This workshop aims to ensure the safety of athletes, spectators, and the wider public while sharing knowledge on creating peaceful sporting environments."
The workshop emphasized the importance of using sport to promote social cohesion and resilience to violent extremism.
Participants explored strategies to enhance security governance and laid the groundwork for continued collaboration ahead of AFCON 2027.
This initiative underscores the region's commitment to hosting a safe, successful tournament while leveraging sports as a tool for unity and community empowerment.
