Kenya won three gold at the International Tennis Federation (ITF)/ Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) Eastern African Junior Team Championships 2025 that concluded on Thursday at the Nairobi Club.

Felicia Ouko and Bathsheba Ogamba delivered Kenya’s first gold in the under-14 girls singles after seeing off Burundi opponents in straight sets.

Ogamba beat Chantai Niyimbabazi 6-4, 6-2 while Ouko wiped the floor with Marie Celia Kezakimana winning 6-1, 6-2 to seal the gold.

“I feel so nice representing Kenya in the finals. It is a privilege, and the support we have received has been incredible. The team has been so good, and the coach is really reviving our energy,” said Ogamba.

‎‎In the boys under-16 singles category, Kenya’s Jeff Hesbon Okuku was crowned champion after defeating Francis Bireha of Burundi by straight sets of 6-1, 6-0.

“I knew that match wasn't hard for me because I trained very well. One of the challenges was the harsh sun, but I am glad I overcame it. I was trying to take charge in the match. My goal is to compete in major tournaments like Wimbledon. Novak Djokovic is my idol—I love his style of play and aim to emulate him,” said Okuku.

The third gold was delivered by Seline Ahoya, who defeated Burundi’s Yusra Irakoze 6-1, 6-0, alongside Nancy Kawira, who won her under 16 singles against Bebita Ishimwe 6-4, 6-4 also from Burundi.

Kenya however lost the fourth gold in the boys under 14 after Ugandan duo Cosmas Munguriek and Samuel Okello defeated Ayaan Quadros and Vihaan Bulsara respectively.

Meanwhile, ITF Development Officer for East and Central Africa Ntwali Thierry, announced that Kenya would host the under-14 Africa Junior Championship at the end of February.

He added other categories will be participating in tournaments in Tunisia and Botswana before the year ends.

“The last time we were here at Nairobi Club, Kenya won the trophy, and last year Burundi emerged victorious. There is a noticeable shift. Tennis is a dynamic sport and standards are improving.”

“We are trying to increase the number of competitions so as to grow the sport. Kenya is the largest nation hosting many events. This tournament is one of our key initiatives this year, and we aim to expand training opportunities for the players,” he added.
