Kenya qualifies for World Beach Volleyball Championships
The national women’s beach volleyball team Friday
qualified for the FIVB World Beach Volleyball Championships to be held from
June 10 to 19 in Rome, Italy.
This comes barely two weeks after the team also
qualified for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for July 28 to August 8, with
Kenya bagging the two slots by virtue of FIVB rankings.
Kenya will represent Africa alongside other three top
ranked teams namely Morocco, Egypt and Mozambique.
Kenya had missed the Commonwealth Games ticket through
the African qualifiers held last month in Ghana after finishing third behind
winners Ghana and Mauritius, but received qualification through the Athlete
Allocation System and team ranking.
Commenting on the development, the Kenya Volleyball
Federation (KVF) deputy president Charles Nyaberi urged the government to
facilitate the squad hit the camp in earnest.
“It’s a big boost to Kenya after last month we were
also given the ticket to compete in the Commonwealth Games. Our work has been
cut out and as a federation we will sit down to plan on how the girls will
start the preparations.
“I can say the sport is making a big splash in the
country and we will continue to urge the government to pour more resources into
beach volleyball because we have many untapped talents there,” Nyaberi told
Citizen Digital.
According to the African Volleyball Confederation
(CAVB) there will be no African qualifiers for the championship due to limited
time.
