The former champions are currently sharpening their claws at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, and head coach Josp Barasa is optimistic they will serve off the year on high when they clash with Nairobi Prisons at Nyayo Indoor Arena on Sunday.

“We have a tough match against Nairobi Prisons who boast of experienced players. Our preparations have been good and we want to go and win because the three points will be key for us.”

Barasa says they are working to improve their backcourt defence, which has been Prisons’ major undoing over the past few seasons.

“We are still working on our weaknesses like defending in the backcourt which has been the area of concern. We are also working on reception, attacking and team play as we target to qualify for play-offs,” noted Barasa.

The five-time African champions lost key attacker Meldina Sande to Rwanda’s Police Volleyball Club prior to the 2024/25 season and Barasa has resorted to young players to fill in the void left by the Mukumu Girls’ alumnus.

The veteran coach has trusted former Kwanthanze Secondary attacker Pauline Ito, elder sister to KCB’s young sensational attacker Marline Terry Tata, and Mercy Cherono who just completed her secondary education at Mwitoti Secondary school to fill in Sande’s shoes.

According to Barasa, the two have performed well and they can only get better with time playing alongside regulars Lorine Kaei and Emmaculate Chemutai.

Prisons currently sit third on the log on 12 points level with DCI, having lost only one match against league leaders Kenya Pipeline.

In other fixtures, reigning champions KCB play Prisons Nairobi while Pipeline are out to extend their unbeaten streak against Kenya Army.
