Kenya Prisons lock up KPA to maintain KVF perfect start

Kenya Prisons maintained their perfect start to the Kenya Volleyball Federation National Men's League following their impressive 3-1 and 3-2 wins against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) respectively at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri County on Friday.

The KPA clash proved to be a litmus test to the Warders as they went toe to toe in the closely contested tie, but it was the defending champions who held on their nerves to see off the Dockers (25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 25-23).

Prisons head coach Dennis Mokua was over the moon after getting the important five points against the two teams who have established themselves in the top four bracket in recent years.

"It is always good when you kick off the league on the right foot. I'm proud of my boys and I hope we will maintain the mojo heading into the second leg," noted Mokua.

In other matches, Trail Blazers registered their first win following their painful loss against Kenya Prisons in the league opener, spanking Kenya Army and AP Kenya 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.

Equity Bank also thumped newbies Base Yetu so as Prisons Rift Valley against KAPU in a 3-0 and 3-1 wins respectively.

In another thrilling match KPA made light work of Kenya Army, disarming the soldiers 3-0 to ease pressure on coach James Ontere.

The women’s contest also saw former champions Kenya Pipeline sign off their perfect weekend after edging Post Bank 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 32-30) in a nail biting clash.

The Oilers, under the tutelage of new coach Geoffrey Omondi, had an unconvincing first set but won 25-23 before convincingly winning the second set 25-21.

The third set however proved the bankers as no pushovers as they forced the Oilers into extra play but the 2022 champions had the last laugh, winning 32-30 and much to the delight of head coach Omondi.

At the same venue, DCI whitewashed Maratha in straight sets as Kenya Prisons disarmed Young Spikers in straight sets.

Kenya Army also spanked hapless Vihiga Volleyball Club 3-0 sets.

Reigning champions Kenya Commercial Bank were not in action.

The volleyball extravaganza at Kamukunji Grounds continues on Saturday but focus now shifts to Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga's Cup.
