Kenya humbles Nigeria in Polo Chaiman’s Club tournament

By Rhone Otieno

East Africa giants Kenya trounced West Africa giants Nigeria 5-4 at the Nairobi Golf Club over the weekend in the Chairman’s Cup polo tourney in a win that saw the national team lay a marker of their intent to have a stellar year.

In the first chaka of the game, Nairobi Polo Club and Abuja Polo Club went toe to toe, with Abuja breaking the deadlock in the opening minutes of the game.

It was an intense physical matchup that even saw Kenya’s captain, Vishal Somaia, tumble off his horse after going head-to-head with one of the Abuja players.

Fred Kambo the Nairobi Polo chairman, led his side back in the game with a tactical swing on goal, leveling the game to 2-1 to Abuja.

Nigeria’s tactical game play kept Kenya on the edge, giving them a strong 3-1 lead.

The third Chaka kicked off strong, with Kenya leveling the playing field to 3-2, leaving the Nigerian boys in a tough position to defend

Despite the great efforts from the Nigerian players, Kenya’s relentless pressure resulted to a 4th goal that put them in front at the close of the 3rd chaka

Nigeria, on the other hand, responded rapidly with their 3rd and 4th goal as they chased the game in both chakas

Kenya looks forward to hosting more international polo tournaments as the Nairobi polo club aims to elevate the polo game and involve grass roots players.
