Kenya Cup: Oilers banking on home court to floor Kabras

Menengai Oilers and Homeboyz tussle it out for the Dala Sevens title at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu

Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru says his side is fired up for this weekend’s upcoming RAI derby featuring Kabras RFC.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Weru said they plan to maximize the home advantage they haven’t experienced against their rivals for the past few seasons and make their fans proud.

“We are fired up for the much-anticipated derby; we are playing at home for the first time after many games away, so we want to take that advantage and make our fans proud, “said Weru.

The Oilers had a great season until last weekend when they narrowly lost to KCB 27-25, and the head coach says they are keen to quickly bounce back to winning ways against the unbeaten Kabras.

“The team has played well this season. The players have given their best in every game. Even with the loss to KCB, we were missing four key players, but they still had to fight to come back and win the game narrowly because of their experienced bench.

“I am still proud of the show they put in, “added Weru.

KCB lead the Kenya Cup standings with 45 points, one ahead of the second-place Kabras RFC, while the Oilers are third with 41 points, something the former Kenyan international admits to the game's growth in the country.

“The game has grown. The teams have improved so much with quality players that the competition is enjoyable to watch.

"I must admit there is a reason why Kabras are unbeaten, and they have won the cup in the last three seasons. Adding players back from the sevens duty makes them even stronger, but we don’t fear them.

“We are ready for the clash,” stated the veteran tactician
