Kenya Cup: Obae keen to extend scoring streak as Oilers face Nakuru RFC

The eighth edition of the Nakuru Derby promises to be entertaining as Menengai Oilers prepare to face Nakuru RFC in one of the most anticipated clashes of the Kenya Cup season 2024/25 round four fixtures.

With the head-to-head record finely poised with four wins for Oilers and three for Nakuru in their last seven meetings, the stage is set for another electrifying showdown this Saturday at the Nakuru athletic club from 4 PM.

Amos Obae, one of the standout players for Menengai Oilers this season, is expected to play a pivotal role in the derby. The dynamic backline joined Oilers from Nakuru RFC before the start of the season and has been in red-hot form, scoring in each of his last three Kenya Cup matches.

Ahead of the match, Obae shared his thoughts in an interview with Citizen Digital, reflecting on the personal significance of the derby and his ambitions for the game.

“Facing my former team, Nakuru RFC, this Saturday will be special for me, as it’s where my name first gained recognition in Kenyan rugby,” Obae said.

“This will be my first derby against Wanyore, and I’m looking forward to it, should I be selected.

“My goal is to help my team secure all five points and to continue my scoring streak, having scored in all three matches we played last year.”

Obae’s form and familiarity with Nakuru RFC’s playing style make him a key asset for the Oilers, who will be looking to assert their dominance in the derby.

For Nakuru RFC, it will be a chance to reclaim bragging rights and level the win-loss record against their local rivals.

Last season, Oilers secured a 19-10 win, which was their first-ever win at the Nakuru athletic club.

In other matches, defending champions Kabras RFC will travel to Nairobi to face Strathmore Leos, Kenya Harlequins welcome Impala RFC while Mwamba takes on KCB, cash-strapped Kisumu RFC host Diani-based South Coast Pirates, with both teams seeking to get their first win of the season. Blak Blad will face Nondies from 3 PM.
