Kenya Cup: GSU out to dispatch APK, KPA with quarter-finals in mind

General Service Unit (GSU) head coach Gideon Tarrus says his side will use the weekend’s Kenya Cup matches as a dress-rehearsal for the quarterfinals.

The paramilitary side have been lined up to face Administration Police Kenya (APK) and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on Thursday and Sunday respectively.

GSU trounced their opponents Kenya Army 3-0 and Equity 3-1 in their opening fixtures last month which already earned them a ticket to the last eight.

Having booked a slot to the knock-out stages, Tarus says winning the weekend matches will only be a bonus but he will be aiming at using them to gauge their improvement as a team.

“We’re not going all out to win the matches because we have already bagged our quarterfinal ticket. I just want to use the matches to know where we are as a team because there are some things we have been working on in our training,” he said.

“The two matches will help us know what we are supposed to improve on as a team ahead of the play-offs, both for the Kenya Cup and the league.”

Tarrus says he is focusing on improving his team with the aim of bagging the inaugural Kenya Cup and the men’s league, having been unsatisfied by their play so far.

The Wafalme Stars head coach has pointed out blocks and back court defense as areas they are working on to become solid.

“We have improved a little on the back court defense but we still have work to do. It is a gradual process and I’m sure we will get there. We are also working on our services and blocks,” noted Tarrus.

GSU currently top Pool A on six points ahead of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Administration Police (AP).

Five matches have been lined up on Thursday with Kenya Prisons taking on Postbank in the only women’s fixture of the day.

In other men’s fixtures, Chema Volleyball club will be up against Trail Blazers while KAPU will lock horns with Kenya Prisons.

The matches run through to Sunday in an all packed weekend of action.
