Kenya cleared to host CHAN 2025, AFCON 2027

Renovation works ongoing at the Kasarani International Stadium. The stadium is one of the three facilities that Kenya will use to host the CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027 matches.

Kenya’s road to hosting the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is now officially on course.

The latest is coming after an update from Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya who appeared before the Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Sports at Bunge Towers today.

CS Mvurya confirmed that the Ksh1.6 billion hosting fee required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has been fully settled by the State Department for Sports ending months of speculation about Kenya’s readiness.

Mvurya affirmed, noting that earlier delays had stemmed from budgetary constraints, as outlined in the 2024/25 Supplementary Estimates report. In preparation for CHAN 2025, Nyayo and Kasarani stadia have been earmarked as host venues and are currently undergoing renovations to meet CAF standards.

Beyond the tournaments, the Ministry is also eyeing long-term sports development. CS Mvurya revealed that the government is committed to constructing 37 sports academies across the country.

Already, 27 contracts have been signed, with contractors set to mobilize to sites beginning this April.

CS Mvurya assured stakeholders that the government would not interfere with the operations of sports federations, promising support and respect for institutional independence.

With CAF’s green light now secured, Kenya is not only on track to welcome Africa’s footballing giants but also laying the groundwork for a lasting sports legacy
