The Kenya Boxing Federation (KBF) is working
tirelessly to ensure a smooth transition between the current crop of active
boxers and the next generation poised to replace them.
This commitment was highlighted by KBF Secretary
General David Munuhe, who also serves as the assistant coach for the national
boxing team, the "Hit Squad," under head coach Benjamin Musa.
The average age of the Kenya national team boxers is
30 years while their opponents from Europe, Asia and the US are 20 years and
Kenyan boxers always find it challenging to match their speed and agility in
the ring.
“This is something we have identified, and we are
actively addressing it. When you visit our training camps, you will notice
young, upcoming boxers training alongside seasoned athletes.
“We are grooming them to challenge the prominent
boxers and eventually take their places. We’ve welcomed them into the national
team to reduce the gap, but our biggest challenge remains the lack of
sufficient support,” said Munuhe.
Munuhe expressed optimism about the future, noting
that the young talents are making significant strides.
“The future is bright, and these upcoming boxers
will soon step into the shoes of seasoned athletes like Elizabeth Andiego. As
Kenyan boxing fans, I urge you to stay positive and continue supporting our
national team. Let’s avoid being overly critical and focus on building our
athletes. I believe, with your support, we will make you proud.”
The federation's efforts reflect its determination to
sustain the sport's growth and ensure Kenya's boxing legacy remains strong for
generations to come.
