Kenya Diabetes Study Group (KDSG) on Saturday hosted Sports Day at the Public Service Club in Nairobi, under the theme “Every Step Counts.”
The event brought together healthcare professionals and
members of the public for a day of fun and fitness aimed at raising awareness
about diabetes and obesity.
Participants, including doctors, nurses, nutritionists,
children, and community members, engaged in a variety of activities such as
football, athletics, volleyball, chess, and archery. In addition to the games,
free health screenings were conducted, and educational tips on healthy living
were shared with attendees.
Speaking during the event, KDSG Chairperson Dr. Roselyn
Ngugi called for urgent attention to the growing threat of lifestyle diseases
in Kenya. “Diabetes is quickly becoming a silent epidemic in this country. We
must take bold steps, both as health professionals and as a community, to
encourage healthier lifestyles and early diagnosis,” she said.
According to the World Health Organization, about 821,500
adults in Kenya were living with diabetes in 2021, representing approximately
3% of the adult population. The prevalence among adults aged 20 to 79 stood at
4%.
The event underscored the power of physical activity in
preventing and managing diabetes and set the stage for more community-centered
health initiatives across the country.
