Africa games champion Emily Wamusyi Ngii claimed the 10km race walk title as the KDF championship held at Ulinzi Sports Complex, Nairobi, entered the second day on Tuesday.

Emily Ngii clocked 48:40:2 to win the race ahead of Kate Assumpta 52:15:1 and Naomi Chepkirui 53:25:54 of Moi Air Base, who finished second and third, respectively.

Simon Wachira claimed the men's category after clocking 43:05:14, followed closely by Stephen Mutuku, while Nicodemus Musau from Modika clinched third place.

In the other finals, newcomer senior private Leah Jeruto Kibet from Kipkaren in Elgeyo Marakwet County clinched her maiden KDF title in the 3000m women steeple chase by shrugging off stiff competition from Diana Chepkorir and Mercy Wanjiru after clocking 9:47:75.

Despite the achievement, Jeruto underlined her intent to secure a berth amongst Kenya’s travelling party to this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France.

“I am happy with the outcome today, but I am fully focused on securing qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“I am scheduled to participate in some races, one of them being in Poland and am confident of achieving my ambition.”

Nanyuki-based Vivian Chebet eased to victory in the 400-meter final by cutting the tape at 54:32, as Loice Morara of MAB came second.

“I normally compete in 800m but am proud of what I have achieved today. However, I should work more to lower my time to excel more.” She added.

The games will culminate tomorrow in a ceremony graced by Cabinet Secretary for Defense Aden Duale.
