KCB Rugby produced a composed second-half performance to edge out Menengai Oilers 25-15 in a pulsating Kenya Cup clash at the ASK Showground.
The Oilers signaled their intent early but were left to rue a missed penalty attempt that would have handed them the lead. KCB capitalised moments later when Nick Okullo crossed over for the opening try, with Brian Wahinya adding the extras for a 7-0 advantage.
Oilers responded swiftly, slicing through the KCB defence to touch down and narrow the deficit to 7-5. However, Abutwalib Wesonga’s missed conversion proved costly in what would become a recurring theme for the hosts.
Wahinya stretched KCB’s lead with a well-struck penalty for a 10-5 scoreline before adding two more in quick succession to push the bankers 16-5 ahead.
Oilers refused to fade. Kipchirchir powered over for a try to cut the gap to 16-10, but once again Wesonga failed to convert. The hosts then scored another unconverted try to edge within a single point at 16-15 heading into halftime after another missed conversion.
The second half belonged to Wahinya’s boot. The dependable kicker calmly slotted three penalties to steadily pull KCB clear at 19-15, 22-15 and eventually 25-15, sealing a hard-fought victory for the visitors.
Speaking after the match, KCB head coach Andrew Amonde praised his side’s resilience.
“We knew coming to Nakuru would be tough. Oilers are a quality side and they showed that today. I’m proud of how the boys managed the second half, especially our discipline and game control. Taking the points when they came made the difference,” said Amonde.
The victory strengthens KCB’s position in the Kenya Cup standings, while Oilers will reflect on missed kicks that ultimately proved decisive.
KCB Rugby now turn their focus to a blockbuster encounter against Kabras Sugar RFC at the KCB Sports Club on March 7, 2026.
