KCB eye back-to-back Africa glory in Tunisia

KCB sights are firmly set on lifting back-to-back African Women’s Clubs Volleyball Championships titles during this year’s continental event which gets underway next Friday in Kelibia, Tunisia.

The Bankers return to the coastal town of Kelibia with fresh memories where they defeated record-holders Al Ahly of Egypt 3-1 in last year’s final to end their 16-year continental title wait.

During the showdown, KCB got off the canvas and lifted the championship record-holders off their feet with a huge uppercut that sent shockwaves through the sport dismissing them in sets of 25-18, 25-22, 11-25, 28-26 to bag their second title and their first since 2006.

They are currently sharpening their claws at their base in Nairobi and head coach Japheth Munala is optimistic the squad will hit top form before departing for Tunisia early next week.

“This championship provides a great opportunity for us to showcase our volleyball talent across the continent while also exposing the players to international competition. We expect a valiant display from our team throughout the tournament for us to defend our title.”

KCB will be without last year’s MVP Sharon Chepchumba who joined Greece third-tier side Aris Hessaloniki. The attacker played a key role in dismantling opponents' defence line on the nets throughout the tournament.

Munala has bolstered his squad with the additions of Esther Mutinda, Juliana Namutira, Elizabeth Lemosiany, Faith Cherotich, and Pauline Chemutai.

The youngsters joined a pool of talent with experienced players such as Malkia Striker’s captain Mercy Moim, Edith Wisa, and Libero Lincy Jeruto and will be keen to fly the Kenyan flag high in their debut competition.

On her side, captain Edith Wisa said: “We know the uphill task that awaits us in Tunisia, as a team we are ready to conquer the continent once again and stamp our authority as the undisputed number one Volleyball team in Africa.”

Other Kenyan representatives Kenya Pipeline are fine-tuning their skills at Makande Social Hall in Mombasa ahead of the championship.
