Kabras Sugar RFC head coach Carlos Katywa has attributed the club’s sustained dominance in Kenyan rugby to a deliberate focus on grassroots talent development and a well-structured academy system.

Speaking on the team’s success, Katywa highlighted the club’s strong ties with schools across Western Kenya as a key pillar in nurturing young talent.

“I think one of the best things that we do very well with our team is our development side, developing age groups, and the way we also have a good relationship with the different schools around.

"What we have done as a club is identify various schools and build relationships between us and them,” Katywa said.

Kabras Sugar have established themselves as a powerhouse in the Kenya Cup, and according to their coach, the secret lies in investing in future stars early and giving them a clear pathway to elite competition.

Central to this approach is the club’s academy, which integrates promising players into a structured development program. Katywa explained that the club uses its second-tier side as a transition platform, focusing exclusively on youth.

“We have an academy and a strong development age group,” he noted. “What we’ve done very well is use our ESS as an integration space where we do not use any player older than 25.

We rely on players from high school, integrate them, and allow them to grow within the system.

Katywa emphasized, “Players typically spend two to three years in this setup before earning a chance to break into the senior team, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled and well-prepared athletes.

This model has been instrumental in maintaining Kabras Sugar’s competitive edge while shaping the future of Kenyan rugby.”

Kabras are eying their fifth straight Kenya Cup title ahead of the semifinals play-off draw expected before the end of this month.
