Mathare secured instant promotion to the top-tier league last season and are currently placed tenth in the league standings on 40 points with an unassailable lead of seven points above the drop zone with two matches remaining.
The Slum Boys endured a tough period in the start of their return, similar struggle often faced by newcomers owing to the intensity of the top tier league, but have made a significant step in their fight against relegation in the second half of the season.
“When I was hired after the team earned promotion, the management made it clear that the primary goal was to stay in the Premier League, said Kamau
“I have worked with that target in mind, and I’m glad we’ve achieved it with two matches to spare.”
Kamau attributed their achievement to keep their top tier status to resilience and team work as well as Musa Masika’s instant impact after joining from Gor Mahia in January.
The wide attacker has been instrumental since his arrival, contributing to nine goals—scoring six and assisting three.
“I thank the management for providing the necessary support, which has been crucial to our success. Congratulations to my boys—they’ve shown great hunger and purpose, especially in the last seven matches, and that’s why they’ve secured our Premier League status for next season.”
“Musa has been outstanding in terms of work rate and professionalism. Despite limited starts—just two so far—he’s remained positive and impactful. His contribution has added the creative edge we previously lacked in attack,” he added.
“He looks more settled now, and with Kenya hosting CHAN, if he keeps performing like this, he could earn a call-up to the provisional squad. I know the kind of special player he is.”
Despite being mathematically safe, Kamau is setting his sights higher, targeting a strong finish in the final two matches of the campaign.
“Even though we can’t be relegated, we’re still aiming to win our last two games. If results go our way, six more points could lift us as high as sixth on the table,” he noted.
Kamau’s one-year contract with Mathare United expires at the end of the season and the former Posta Rangers and Thika United tactician has his cards in his chest about his future.
He has led his charges in 32 matches, winning 10,
drawing 10 and losing 12.
