Newly appointed Mathare United head coach John Kamau says his main task is to save the team from relegation, after a poor start which has seen the 2008 champions lose 13 out of their 16 matches played so far.

The former Posta Rangers and KCB tactician has taken over former Ezekiel Akwana who parted ways with the club over a week ago.

With Mathare sitting only above Vihiga Bullets on the log at 17th, Kamau knows the urgency with which he needs to get results if he is indeed to achieve his mission.

“No football fan will want to see a club with a great history like Mathare United relegated from the league. That is why I’m determined to give my best with the rest of the team to save the club from axe, and so far I’m happy with the development that is happening here,” said the former Kenya U-20 national team coach.

The youthful tactician says they are working on improving their defence to avoid conceding last minute goals, which points out as a problem they have struggled with lately.

“Lately the team has been conceding late goals and dropping points in matches they were in positions to win, so our defence is an area we must improve on and I can already see some progress in training.”

With his first assignment being on Saturday against his former club Talanta FC, Kamau wants a good start to inspire the struggling side.

“Talanta are tough opponents and as a team we will take one game at a time to save the club from being relegated and make our fans proud,” Kamau told Citizen Digital.

Kamau who was recently serving under Francis Kimanzi at Wzito FC before they were sacked last month after a poor run, believes with half a season to, Mathare are in safe hands.

He finds himself in the same position as former Mathare coach Francis Ouna who came in towards the end of last season to save the club from relegation, only to leave just before the start of the current campaign after securing a coaching role in Rwanda with Musanze FC.
