Kakamega High rugby 15s team out to arrest staggering decline
The eight-time national 15s champions have faced challenges post-Covid-19 failing to reach nationals finals since relinquishing their title in 2023.
“Most teams did not take a break during the holiday, so they have been on heavy training. There are going to be fireworks in this region (Western) when the games begin but I believe we will bring back the trophy in western,” said Wamanga.
Wamanga is still reeling from the recent slip that has seen his side also fail to reclaim the Western region 15s crown, and he is warning the school games will even get tougher this year.
“Every top team has really improved very much and have strengthened their school and have been playing high profile friendlies and participating in top tournaments. I believe we will be in a good position to match them and produce quality,” he added.
Reigning national and East Africa champions All Saints Embu, Koyonzo High School of Kakamega and Busia’s Butula Boys have recently dominated the rugby 15s scene.
The Term One Games are set to start from the lower levels a few weeks after schools open, and will feature rugby 15s, hockey, handball and basketball.
