Anthony ‘Jamal’ Ombok has vowed to bring in new sponsors to boxing after he earned a fresh four-year mandate as president of the boxing federation
Ombok
expressed optimism about the future of the sport, stating that the expected
sponsorship deals will play a crucial role in elevating the sport.
“We
have managed to sustain boxing despite operating without sponsors for the past
five years. However, we have consistently improved with each step we take. More
progress is on the horizon, and once we finalize these sponsorship deals, it
will mark a turning point for both local and international competitions,” Ombok
said.
He
further emphasized the potential growth of the sport, saying, “We have engaged
in discussions with two or three sponsors who are willing to support us in this
new term. Our goal is to restore boxing to its former glory, and this requires
collective support from all stakeholders.”
The
elections also saw the appointment of new and returning officials to key
positions within the federation. Lydia Kinyua, previously the assistant
treasurer, was elected as First Vice President, while Chrispine Onyango takes
over as Second Vice President.
David
Munuhe Karitu retained his position as Secretary General, with Joseph Ochieng
Otieno, a former BFK member, stepping in as his assistant. Benjamin Moses
Oyombi continues as treasurer, assisted by newcomer Gladys Musavi. John Waweru
Wangai remains the Competition Secretary, with Joselyn Mare as his assistant.
Notably,
legendary boxer Ibrahim Wachira Bilali, a bronze medallist at the 1984 Olympic
Games, and Dominic Opiyo have joined the executive committee as members.
The
elections were supervised by Sports Registrar Rose Wasike alongside Ministry of
Sports officials Abel Manyara and James Akama.
