Jaded Ulinzi Starlets ready to shrug off slow start

Ulinzi Starlets players cuddle together before a KWPL match

Ulinzi Starlets assistant coach Cliff Otieno believes that the demise of the head coach, Joseph Wambua Mwanza, has contributed to their slow start to the current Kenyan Women's Premier League campaign.

The soldiers, who are the reigning FKF Women’s Cup defending champions, kicked off the season on a low note managing one win, two draws, and a loss.

The only win came last weekend when they humbled Zetech Sparks 2-1 at Zetech University grounds with goals from Joy Kinglady and Fasila Adhiambo enough to hand them the bragging rights.

The win propelled Ulinzi to seventh position on the log with five points after four matches.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, assistant coach Otieno said the win will motivate his girls to go to the next fixture against Mombasa Olympics on Saturday in high spirits.

“It’s a fact that we haven’t kicked off the season well, and to me, I think the girls are still in shock of losing their head coach, Joseph Wambua Mwanza, who succumbed on September 20, after battling Colon cancer.

“As a coach, we understand them well because the deceased was a great friend of the girls, and he brought belief and togetherness.

“Things must move on, and I’m happy that they managed a win last weekend, which means they are back on track.

“I hope that they will continue winning the next matches as we aim to clinch the title this season.”

However, Cliff hailed their two new payers, saying they have jelled well with the rest and will be instrumental in their quest to clinch the league.

“I was very much impressed by how Florence Omollo (Forward) and Janet Juma (Midfielder) have fast adapted to our style of play.

“We signed them from Acakoro Ladies, and I believe they will help us win the title with the same spirit and focus.”

The soldiers will battle Mombasa Olympics on Saturday in the next fixture as they look forward to a win.

“We are meeting Mombasa Olympic next, and I’m sure enough that we will defeat them. We are improving from our mistakes from the last match, and with proper preparation, nothing will stop the girls.

“I congratulate them for a good job done and urge them to maintain the focus. Added Cliff.
