Issa Team wins inaugural Kenya Phygital Cup
The win was the result of a 9-7 victory in the digital football segment, followed by a 3-0 win on the 5v5 physical soccer pitch, all under the floodlights.
The Kenya Phygital Cup, a competition that fuses both physical and digital football, attracted 16 teams competing for a prestigious opportunity, the chance to represent Kenya at the global competition, The Games of The Future, which would be held in Dubai starting November 21, 2025.
The unique format saw teams battle it out on both physical soccer fields and digital (esports) platforms to decide the overall winner.
Issa Team and Santiago Ent. were in Group A, where they finished first and second respectively. Issa Team had previously defeated Santiago Ent. 7-5 in their group-stage encounter. The champions had an impeccable run throughout the tournament, winning all their matches and demonstrating dominance both physically and digitally.
Issa Team’s captain, Erick Koira, expressed confidence in his team’s potential to perform on the global stage.
“Today we have shown our quality and our talent. Clearly on our day, we can beat any team. I am confident that the boys will go toe-to-toe against the best nations in Dubai.”
Esports Kenya President, Ronny Lusigi, lauded the success of the inaugural tournament, calling it a significant milestone for the country.
He praised the event’s high spectator turnout, media coverage, and the impressive display of skill from all participants. “This first edition of the Phygital Cup has exceeded our expectations. We had a great turnout from spectators, enthusiastic coverage from the media, and of course, a wonderful display of talent by the players. We look forward to seeing the boys do well in Dubai,” Lusigi stated.
He also extended gratitude to the World Phygital Community (WPC) for introducing the concept of Phygital sports, which blends technology and traditional sports. “It is a game-changer that fuses technology and sports,” Lusigi remarked.
As Issa Team prepares for the global challenge in Dubai, Kenya has certainly made a statement in the world of Phygital sports.
