Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has lauded Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson for organizing the Sakaja Super Cup, terming it a transformative platform for nurturing youth talent.
Speaking during the finals of the tournament’s second edition in Dandora, where Githurai All Stars faced off against Kawasaki, Mohammed emphasized the importance of grassroots sports development.
“This is the best way to nurture talent from the grassroots,” Mohammed stated. “We commend Governor Sakaja for this initiative. Over 780 teams participated, and we witnessed incredible talent. We will now harness this potential and work towards elevating our teams to the next level.”
The FKF President also urged other county Governors to emulate this initiative, noting that such tournaments are instrumental in identifying and fostering talent for national teams.
Nairobi Governor Sakaja, who presided over the derby, congratulated the winning team and all participants, reaffirming his commitment to improving sports infrastructure in the county.
He announced that several stadiums, including Kihumbuini and Woodley, are currently under construction and are expected to be ready before the third edition of the Sakaja Super Cup next year.
“Next year, several stadiums in Nairobi will be ready to accommodate more teams and provide better venues for sports. Our vision is not just to offer a platform for showcasing talent but also to demonstrate that sports can pay and provide a livelihood,” Sakaja affirmed.
The Governor also highlighted his broader vision for youth empowerment through sports, promising to expand the tournament to include other disciplines.
“Sports can pay, and we want to give our youth that opportunity not just to showcase their talents but also to earn. Next year, we will have more stadiums, a better tournament, and even more teams,” Sakaja added.
With over 780 teams participating from all 17 sub-counties in Nairobi, the Sakaja Super Cup has proven to be a remarkable avenue for tapping into the country’s football potential and inspiring future stars.
