Harambee Stars great Otieno tells football legends to upskill
According to Otieno, it is imperative upon the current breed of coaches to update their coaching techniques to help drive the game forward.
Speaking on Friday at a city hotel during the 2023/24 FKF Awards Gala, Otieno documented his own journey in football which saw him turn out in the Kenyan Premier League for Tusker FC before heading to South Africa where he turned out for Sanlam Santos for 15 years while also captaining the national football side, Harambee Stars.
In this journey, he was mentored by amongst others Dan Shikanda, a former defender like himself and he was quick to acknowledge their contributions in his career trajectory, alongside Nick Yakhama and veteran coach Robert "The Lion" Matano.
"To the legends, let's go back to class, let's learn... let's move to the next level," he said amidst applause from the guests.
Besides a decorated career on the pitch, Otieno has gone back to class and is today a CAF A Licence coach.
He's also rallied the corporates to join the bandwagon and pump money into football to help the game grow.
"To the corporates, thank you very much for supporting (football programmes),"he explained.
