Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat says he has never been subjected to any external pressure to select certain players to represent the country on international assignments.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Monday Football Show, Firat insisted he has always selected players on merit and will stick to that principle.

“I have never been under pressure to select players for the national duty every players that I call for national duty I have studied them and they are there on merit,” Firat said.

The Turk also dismissed reports that he is out of touch with local football, saying he is always scouting for players across the country in different leagues.

“I have moved across the country watching different competitions and I have seen better player playing in the lower divisions league who I feel if they can have something to offer for the national teams so I not only follow the Kenya  premier league but also other leagues in the world,” he added.

Firat assured Kenyan fans as well as players in the lower divisions that no selection bias will be applied on players featuring outside the top flight league as long as they impress him.

“Every good player deserves a chance to give his best to the national team and if they meet the requirement, they will get the chance irrespective of the league they play in.”
