Harambee Starlets pick vital lessons from Pink Ladies Cup
The Beldine Odemba coached side wound up their campaign with a 4-1 win against the Philippines on Wednesday evening at the Emirhan Stadium in Antalya, Turkey.
Elizabeth Mutukiza scored a brace in seventh and 36 minutes as Purity Alukwe and Fasila Adhiambo completed the scores in the 18th and 81st minutes respectively. Philippians consolation goal was scored through a penalty spot in the 66th minute.
In a post-match interview, Wambui who plies her trade with Tanzania heavyweights Simba Queens urged the federation and the Ministry of Sports to organize for them more tournaments of the caliber to help the team to improve their forms ahead of the upcoming qualifiers.
“It has been a very nice tournament and it has been a big challenge for us. We played against better opponents who have heavily invested in the game of football and from that we have learnt a lot and as well they have also learnt from us.
“It’s also a good opportunity to be in the National team and I pray for more opportunities in the near future. Personally I feel that naming the best player of the tournament and I will continue pushing so that I can win more trophies.”
Kenya's lineup saw two changes from their previous match against Russia, with Lydia Akoth and Purity Alukwe stepping into the starting eleven.
The Starlets showcased disciplined play, maintaining steady possession and executing quick passes in the attacking third.
It was Starlets’ first win of the four-team tournament, following previous losses to Russia – who thrashed them 4-0 on Saturday as well as Chinese Taipei who defeated them by a solitary goal.
The tournament was their first piece of action since their defeat to Botswana in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on December 5, last year.
