Harambee Rising Stars return triumphant after AFCON 2025 qualification
Kenya’s U20 national football team,
the Harambee Rising Stars, has returned home in triumph after securing a spot
in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The team earned their place in the
continental tournament with impressive wins against Sudan and Burundi, sparking
renewed optimism for the future of Kenyan football.
Head coach Salim Babu expressed
pride in the team's achievements but stressed the need for better preparation.
“We’ve learned a lot from the games,
but with more time and support from the government and federation, I believe we
could perform even better,” he remarked.
Babu highlighted the team's depth of
talent and emphasized the importance of integrating these young players into
the senior national team.
Captain Amos Wanjala was elated with
the team’s qualification, calling it a significant milestone.
“It feels great to lead this team to
AFCON qualification. The experience has been invaluable,” Wanjala said.
He also pointed to the new coaching
strategy centred around the 'tiki-taka' style of play.
“We need to sharpen our finishing,
but with more backing from the federation and government, we can aim for bigger
targets, including winning trophies.”
Ibrahim Wanzala, the tournament’s
best goalkeeper, also reflected on the achievement.
“I’m grateful to God for this
opportunity,” he said, following news of his call-up for the upcoming CHAN
tournament.
“My focus is now on AFCON, but I
know the next level will be challenging. We’ll need more support as we push for
success,” he added.
With their sights set on AFCON 2025,
the Harambee Rising Stars are determined to build on their recent success and
continue advancing Kenyan football on the international stage.
