Handball League review: Nairobi Water, Equity and NCPB win to stretch unbeaten runs

NCPB’s Sardy Francis blocks Kisiwa TTI’s attacker Yusuf Pwoka from scoring during their league match at Kaloleni Handball Court, Nairobi.

Nairobi Water continued their perfect start to the season on Sunday after thumping newbies Kisiwa TTI 53-18 in the Kenya Handball Federation women’s league match that was staged at Nyayo National Stadium Handball Court, Nairobi.

On-form Cecilia Katheu was a thorn in the flesh for the Kisiwa TTI, leading their rout by netting 20 goals with the newbies nowhere near marching the former champions’ prowess.

Head coach Jack Ochieng hailed his side after the dominant display.

“I’m happy we bagged the two points. We were prepared for the game, the girls played well and won the match.”

Ochieng is aiming to reclaim the title after losing it to Ulinzi Sharks last season by two points.

The win means the Water Queens have now amassed a maximum 12 points, with Ochieng eyeing the league unbeaten after losing it by a whisker to the Sharks.

The soldiers stopped Nairobi Water’s 10-year dominance last season after thumping them in the final match of the league and Ochieng knows his side must remain perfect if they are to reclaim the gong.

“For us to win the title once again, we have to win all our matches. All teams are equally good and the league is competitive so everyone has to be up to the task,” noted Ochieng.

The two teams top the log on 12 points each, though Ulinzi have a better goal difference while National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) who are also enjoying an unbeaten run sit third on eight points after four games.

At the same venue, Equity continued to pile pressure on men’s league title holders NCPB after thumping Kisiwa TTI men 34-24 in a thrilling match.

Equity who lost the title at the death in last season’s title run-in will also be looking to keep it perfect with experienced coach Peter Mwathi aware of the daunting task in his second season with the bankers.

Equity sit second on the log on 12 points after six matches, four behind NCPB who also eased past Kisiwa TTI men 39-32 on Saturday to stretch their unbeaten run.

Other title challengers Kenya Defence Forces were not in action this weekend.
