Former champions GSU Thursday defeated National Youth Service (NYS) 3-1 (25-12,23-25,25-16 and 25-23) sets at Nyayo Gymnasium, to firmly stay on course of finishing top of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National Men’s League regular season.

GSU are currently second on 33 points, one adrift of leaders KPA who have already played all their regular season matches while the paramilitary side have two matches to go in the fourth and final leg.

The former champions, who are eyeing to reclaim their KVF stranglehold after two years of heartache, were off the blocks with a 25-15 victory in the opening set.

However, NYS threw a spanner in the works in the second set as they responded impressively to win 25-22.

Their momentum was short-lived as GSU regrouped to claim the third set 25-20 before sealing the match with a convincing 25-18 win in the fourth set to send a huge statement of intent ahead of the playoffs.

NYS remains in the relegation zone and is now mathematically out of the playoff race, with first top eight finishers battling for the men’s league honours.

NYS head coach Onesmus Kanga praised his charges for winning a set against GSU.

“The game was very challenging - we played against former champions. But at least we are happy that we managed to win a set. In the first set, the players were tense, knowing they were facing a strong opponent, but in the second set, they composed themselves and played better.”

“We are going to recruit new and more experienced players to be able to compete favorably. Today’s coordination didn’t go as planned, but we will improve,” he said.

At the same venue, Trailblazers defeated Kenya Forest Service (KFS) 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23) in another intense encounter.

Trailblazers dominated the first set 25-12, but KFS levelled the match by taking the second set 25-23.

Trailblazers regained control, winning the third and fourth sets 25-16 and 25-23, respectively, to seal the victory.

Reigning champions Kenya Prisons are third on 32 points and will wind up the regular season against Kenya BaseYetu on Friday.

The matches roll on through to Sunday, with the top eight teams set to battle it out in the end of the season playoffs.

Equity Bank, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Trailblazers, KAPU, and Nairobi Prisons round up the top eight slots respectively.
