Governor Bii bullish as Uasin Gishu County hosts African Road Cycling Championships

Charles Kagimu crosses the finish line to be the overall men winner in the third edition of the Jubilee Live Free Race in Nairobi.

It’s all systems go for the CAC African Road Cycling Championships that will take place this week in Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi counties between October 9-13.

The week of racing begins with the Time Trials on Wednesday morning – an individual effort against the clock to post the fastest time possible.

The riders will tackle an enthralling 11.2km circuit around Eldoret City Centre, with the Women’s Junior event kicking things off at 9 am. They will take one lap of the circuit, followed by the Junior Men, Women’s Under 23 and Elite categories, who will race for two laps.

The men’s Under 23 and Elite will roll down the ramp at 13:45 and race three laps for a total of 33.8km.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii said: “I want to welcome all our fans and we welcome all who will participate… this is a very exciting event.”

The governor pointed to the economic opportunities the championships presents, citing it as a unique chance to show off the county, attract more investors and positively impact local businesses.

“You can imagine, if people from 20 different countries are cycling… even our local businesses will be impacted positively. Kwa hivyo, hii [county] itaenda kwa map ya juu.

Governor Bii also highlighted Uasin Gishu’s interest in hosting more major events and says the government is working towards a successful bid to host AFCON 2027.

The Kipchoge Keino and 64 stadiums are currently undergoing refurbishment in the hopes of hosting major competitions in the future.
