Speaking after flagging off the Makueni’s premier sports tournament, MKJ Supa Cup, that kicked off at the sub-county level last weekend, Mutula Junior called on youngsters to take up sporting activities as a business venture full of opportunities.

The county boss said at a time when the country continues to struggle with the joblessness crisis, sports was becoming the latest tool to bridge the gap.

“Job opportunities are limited not only here in Makueni but also in the whole country, and because we have the MKJ Supa Cup platform, I urge our youth to embrace this rare chance to change their livelihoods.

“Currently, sports is one of the best paying talents in the world, and we’ve seen many people change families and communities through sports,” said Mutula Junior.

The governor assured that his government will support all sports disciplines in order to grow the diverse talents of the youth in Makueni.

“MKJ Supa Cup is not about football but is an extravaganza that involves all the disciplines. We’re committed to providing the necessary support to our youth to realise their full potential.”

Governor Mutula said his administration had incorporated scouts from various national sports federations into the tournament to help identify outstanding talents who can join national clubs and commercialise their sporting abilities.

The MKJ Supa Cup is bringing together all-star ward teams drawn from the recently concluded Ligi Mashinani tournament to battle for a place in the County Finals.

The kick-off matches were held in Kilome and Makueni sub-counties, while Mbooni, Kibwezi East, Kibwezi West and Kaiti sub-counties are scheduled to compete on March 21.

The championship, which is tailor-made for youngsters aged between 18-23 years, will see teams square it out in football, volleyball, basketball 5×5, basketball 3×3, beach volleyball and beach handball, with Ksh. 3 million cash prizes set to be won in the county finale.

The grand county finals are pencilled for April 2-3 in Wote, where an all-star team will be selected to represent Makueni at the Kenya Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) Games scheduled to take place in Laikipia County later next month.

To weed out any age cheats, the organisers will conduct a thorough vetting a day before the grand finale, with Makueni Sports Executive Committee Member Eng. Sebastian Kyoni warning of severe punishments for those planning to field mercenaries.
