Gor SG Ocholla calls for Firat sacking after Stars recent flop
Gor Mahia Secretary General Sam Ocholla is the latest to call for the dismissal of Engin Firat following Harambee Stars’ recent slump.
The national men’s football team fell 2-0 to South Sudan in the 2025 CHAN Qualifiers last Sunday with the defeat following a twin loss to Cameroon in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers earlier this month.
The Gor Mahia official, who is also in the FKF presidential race, says the Turkish tactician should resign to pave the way for a better choice ‘to take Stars to greater heights.’
“Firat should go home, those are just lucky results-beating Namibia and drawing against Zimbabwe in the 2025 Afcon qualifiers- and I can tell you that we are crawling as a national team.”
“Let me tell you the truth, even our team’s - Gor Mahia- head coach has better qualifications than Firat’s,” said Ocholla.
According to him, Gor Mahia head coach Leonardo Martins Neiva has better qualifications than Firat.
“When you want to appoint Harambe Stars head coach you should consider the merits and demerits. When we advertised for Gor Mahia,s head coach vacancy, we got around 15 international coaches.
“I can tell you that their credentials were far more professional and better than Firat.”
He also stated that the national team head coach has a tendency of selecting ‘average’ players whom he claims that FKF has been manipulating the process.
“When you look at how he is making the selection of players you wonder which kind of a coach is this.
“He comes from abroad then takes the job knowing very well that the national team squad will be manipulated and he will be remote-controlled on who to give a call up and who not to,” he added.
“The federation’s hand has subjected out team to a an average side and when they happen to call our players- Gor Mahia- they don’t give them a chance to play to an extent that the players were complaining that what is the reason for the call up if at all they were not going to play.”
Meanwhile, Stars have already set base in Kampala ahead of the crucial return leg match against South Sudan on Sunday at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.
The youngest team in Africa will seek to upset Kenya for the third time having won 1-0 in an international friendly on September 12, last year.
The winner of the two-legged tie will face either Rwanda or Djibouti in the final qualification round in December.
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have already qualified for the CHAN tournament as co-hosts.
