Gor Mahia has parted ways with shot-stopper Dolph ‘Junior’ Owino, along with three other players, in a squad overhaul.

Owino, a former youth team player, has left the club by mutual agreement after struggling for game time over the past two seasons. His exit follows recent remarks by club CEO Raymond Oruo, who confirmed that the club was in the market for a new goalkeeper, a move that would necessitate releasing some of the current squad members.

“We are looking for a goalkeeper, whether local or international. Once we find one, we will offload some from our current squad,” Oruo stated.

Owino’s departure appeared inevitable, as he had seen little action since his promotion from the junior side two seasons ago. His exit comes amid reports that Gor Mahia is in talks with a Cameroonian goalkeeper.

Also released are; former Nzoia Sugar midfielder Kevin Juma, Enock Wanyama, and Sharrif Musa.

Juma was at the centre of controversy mid-last season, and speculation about his departure had been rife. However, the technical bench remained tight-lipped about the details of his fallout with the club.

Meanwhile, Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has confirmed that midfielder Simiyu remains with the team.

“Simiyu is still our player. He is training with us, and we have no plans to release him at the moment,” Rachier said.

Wanyama and Musa, who both joined Gor Mahia just a season ago, struggled for playing time, mostly making appearances from the bench in league matches and tournaments.

While some players exit, Gor Mahia has reinforced its squad with new signings. The club has secured deals with Ugandan striker Charles Bbaale and Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder Stanley Omondi.

Defender Dennis Ngángá is also in talks for a return after a season in Zambia. Meanwhile, speculation is growing that former Gor Mahia star Benson Omalla could be making a comeback. Omalla recently terminated his contract with Lebanese side Al Safa due to three months of unpaid salaries.

Gor Mahia has experienced mixed results since the departure of Gambian head coach Jonathan McKinstry at the end of last season. The arrival of Croatian coach Sinisa Mihic is expected to revitalize the squad as the team pushes for a record 22nd league title.

During his unveiling, Mihic expressed confidence in his new role:

“I have read about the team, its titles, and history. I am here to make Gor Mahia greater than I found it,” he stated.

The decision to release the four players may have been made even before Mihic’s arrival, as he has only been in charge for a week.

Gor Mahia’s next match is against Mathare United on February 8 at 3 PM EAT.
