Gor Mahia in market for a fifth goalkeeper
Club CEO Raymond Oruo has stated that they are looking for either a local or an international goalkeeper, and the consequence will be that they will offload some of their current shot-stoppers
"We are looking for a goalkeeper, either locally or from another country. Once we get one, we shall definitely off load some from our squad," said Oruo.
The team currently has four goalkeepers including first choice Kevin Omondi, Gad Mathew, Caleb Otieno and Dolph Owino, who was rarely used last season.
Ever since the arrival of Kevin Omondi from Sofapaka early last season, he has been consistent in the first eleven with either Mathew Gad or Caleb Otieno starting from the bench.
"We have noticed a gap between the posts, and since we have serious assignments ahead of us, goalkeeping is one of our priorities when it comes to signing.’’
Gad Mathew was largely out of action last season after he underwent a minor surgery, but even after resuming training, Kevin Omondi was mostly preferred.
Our sources indicate that a Cameroonian goalkeeper is in talks with the club, but no deal has been reached yet. It is however understood that a section of the technical bench is not for the opinion, even though the signing talk is on the table.
The fourth choice goalkeeper Dolph Owino was almost completely unused last season under the two previous coaches, Jonathan MC’Kinstry and Leonardo Neiva, and even under Zedekiah Otieno.
Gor Mahia also recently confirmed talks with Ugandan striker Charles Bbaale alongside Dennis Njire , who is certainly returning to Gor after a season’s stint with Zambian giants Zanaco FC.
Benson Omalla is also said to be in Gor Mahia’s plan especially after terminating his contract with his Libyan club Al Safa Sporting.
In an earlier interview, team manager Victor Nyaoro affirmed that all their goalkeepers are fit to start but stated that no coach can change a winning team.
"Kevin is always preferred because of his form. The rest are equally good , but the technical bench cannot change a winning team,’’ said Nyaoro.
Early last season, the coastal side Bandari FC was rumoured to be in talks with shot stopper Mathew Gad, but the allegations were later rubbished by Gor, who clearly stated that Gad was going nowhere.
It is not clear the criteria that will be used to determine who to drop and who to retain among the four shot stoppers. All of them have always been exceptional whenever they are assigned to man the goal area.
Meanwhile, the newly recruited coach Sinisa Mihic will have an uphill task over the weekend when his side face fellow contenders Tusker FC .
The Brewers beat Gor Mahia 2-1 last month in another super rivalry match.
The club chairman Ambrose Rachier Tuesday told the new head coach that he expects nothing other than titles, stating that he wants Gor at the summit of the table now and until the end of the season.
Mihic also promised to return Gor to its league dominance saying he will use his experience to make Gor greater.
