Gor go four clear after Tusker slip at City Stars
The FKF
Premier League title race took a significant twist this today when Tusker FC
slipped up, allowing Gor Mahia FC to go four clear at the summit.
Gor got their
business done with a 2-1 win over strugglers Mathare United as Tusker were held
in a barren stalemate away at Nairobi City Stars.
Victory for
Gor, sealed with goals from Philemon Otieno and Boniface Omondi, moved their
points tally to 62 with Tusker earning a point to reach 58.
Nzoia Sugar moved
to within just one point of Tusker after winning 1-0 at home to FC Talanta
thanks to Alfred Tanui’s second half winner.
In Kasarani,
Gor took the lead through captain Otieno in the 25th minute after a great pass
from Erest Wendo before Mathare United equalised through Ronald Sichenje 15
minutes later.
Gor
continued to press in the second half with Benson Omalla missing a number of
chances until the 60th minute when Omondi restored their advantage.
Gor head
coach Jonathan McKinstry was far from satisfied with his side’s performance.
"It
wasn't a good performance from my team; we created many chances that could have
helped us kill of the game off and that is something we need to improve on
heading to the next game,” the Briton said.
His counterpart
Collins ‘Korea’ Omondi who was in charge of the team for the first time since
being appointed was happy with the way his team defended against a dangerous
attacking Gor side.
"We
have conceded many goals this season and today we managed to hold Gor and even
created more chances that our strikers failed to capitalise on. I am hoping to
see an improvement in our next match because every game is now like a final to
us,” Korea said.
Record
champions Gor are bidding to reclaim the league title from Tusker who have won
each of the last two seasons.
