Goan Institute crowned champions as KHU Masters Series culminates in Mombasa

The two-day tournament organized by the Mombasa County Hockey Association in partnership with KHU, marked the start of the 2025 Masters calendar after the cancellation of the Kakamega opener.

Twelve teams were pooled into two groups. Pool A featured Nakuru Masters, Parkroad Lions, Impala Veterans, Blue Ocean Chiefs, and Western Masters.

Pool B had six teams: Sikh Union Nairobi, Goan Institute, Wazalendo Veterans, Greensharks Veterans, Kisumu Veterans, and Kisumu Masters.

Day Two saw high-stakes action as teams vied for semi-final slots. Impala Veterans beat Western Masters 3-0, while Goan Institute overpowered Kisumu Masters 8-0.

Parkroad Lions and Blue Ocean Chiefs played to a goalless draw, as did Sikh Union Nairobi and Kisumu Veterans against Wazalendo Veterans and Greensharks Veterans.

In the semi-finals, Impala Veterans edged out Kisumu Veterans 1 -0 while Goan Institute beat Parkroad Lions 2-0 to book a spot in the final.

Parkroad Lions settled for third place after seeing off Kisumu Veterans in the third place finals.

While speaking to Citizen Digital, Goan Institute team captain Austin Otieno was pleased with the performance of the team.

“I am happy that we have clichéd the top prize in Mombasa. The coastal city has always been a good hunting ground for us.

“We were champions last year and this year we have done it again, the team showed great Spirit and God was also on our side,” observed Otieno.
