Former AFC Leopards midfielder Okwemba calls for generational change in Harambee Stars
Former AFC Leopards Captain Charles Okwemba now says it’s time to have a generational change in the national soccer team Harambee Stars.
Speaking
to Citizen Digital, Okwemba said
upcoming players in the junior teams need to be promoted in the senior team for
them to get more exposure and the experience needed for the development.
“There
is a big problem with the senior team; it's time for some change; I feel the
team can better with the smooth transition of junior players…as you can see the
junior teams are performing better in their respective categories,” said
Okwemba.
Stars
failed to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup Of Nations after they drew 1-1
with Zimbabwe on Friday and the former international believes it’s time to
start a new project ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations where Kenya will be
co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
“I think there is enough time now to build a
good team for the 2027 tournament,” he said. “We have enough time to get the right
project that will see our pride of football being restored,”added Okwemba.
He at
the same time wants delegates to vote for the 'right leaders who have the best
interest of Kenyan football at their heart' ahead of the upcoming FKF
presidential elections set for December 7.
“The delegates have the responsibility of
electing good leaders for the top job to make sure that football in this
country heads to the right direction. Next month is make or break for Kenyan
football; they need to be responsible of what they are doing,” stated the
former midfielder.
