FKF-WPL review: Kibera top the log, Bungoma, Vihiga in pursuit
Kibera Soccer Women's head coach David Vijago attributes his team’s strong start in the FKF Women’s Premier League to hard work and solid pre-season preparation.
The Kibera-based team climbed to the top of the league standings with 10 points after a decisive 3-0 victory over Wadadia at Don Bosco Stadium on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
Stellah Adhiambo starred in the match with a brace, while Zainabu Saki added to the scoreline to seal the win.
“I’m thrilled with the girls’ resilience and hard work,” Vijago said. “Our pre-season preparations have set the foundation for our performance this season. Our goal is to win the league, and I believe we can achieve it if we stay focused.”
Kibera shares 10 points with second-placed Vihiga Queens, the four-time champions, while Bungoma Queens, Trinity Starlets, and Kenya Police Bullets round out the top five with 9, 9, and 8 points respectively.
In other league action, Bungoma Queens edged past Kisped Queens with a 1-0 win at Bungoma Polytechnic, and Zetech Sparks pulled off a comeback to defeat Kenya Police Bullets 4-3, thanks to a hat trick from Violet Akinyi.
The Vihiga-Bunyore Starlets match was postponed due to last weekend’s FKF county elections, which were delayed by a court ruling.
Vihiga Queens' head coach Boniface Nyamunyamuh is optimistic about the postponed match’s impact, seeing it as an opportunity for his team to reclaim the top spot.
“Kibera is leading in the league standing because we didn’t play last weekend,” Nyamunyamuh noted.
“With the break, we’ve focused on our striking weaknesses, and I’m hopeful that we’ll secure the win against Bunyore, push our points to 13, and take back our number one position. We aim to win the title and restore the glory, and I’m confident we can achieve it,” he added.
