FKF-PL referees remain unpaid amid fallout over officiating standards
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Caretaker Committee
has confirmed that they are yet to pay league match officials amid an outcry
over the standards of officiating in the country.
Committee member Ali Amur told Citizen TV the funds have
not been wired to their accounts and will be disbursed to officials as soon as
they are received.
There is a huge fallout following this weekend’s officiating
gaffe in the FKF Premier League match featuring Gor Mahia FC and Tusker FC.
The center referee Antony Ongwayo ruled out a last-minute
goal that would have handed the title holders Tusker a 1-0 win over record
champions Gor at the Thika Municipal Stadium.
Play did not resume after that decision with the match
ending prematurely as Ongwayo was escorted to dressing room with security
personnel of the day.
Matano launched a scathing attack on the official,
saying he was unfit to handle top-flight and called for his expulsion from the
game.
Matano's complaints were echoed by his Sofapaka
counterpart David Ouma who said they had also been victims of poor officiating
on multiple occasions this season.
Ouma further called for the extreme action that Kenya
should only hire officials from foreign neighboring countries as he sowed more
doubt on the professionalism of locally trained referees.
Kenya is currently under a FIFA ban, meaning no referee
from the country can officiate in international matches.
