The club confirmed on Tuesday through an official statement on their Facebook page, citing the end of contracts and the need to strengthen key areas.
The decision marks the beginning of a new phase for the 2008 league champions, who are seeking to build a more competitive outfit after finishing 10th last season under head coach John Kamau.
Among the most notable departures is Eugene Mukangula, who had joined the club on a short-term deal midway through last season.
A calming presence in midfield, Mukangula’s experience was valuable during a transitional period for the team.
Also exiting is dependable left back Erickson Mulu, who was a regular feature in the starting XI and is known for his versatility in both defense and attack.
Two goalkeepers—Steve Njunge and Michael Wanyika—have also been released. Njunge joined from Nairobi City Stars while Wanyika was brought in from Ulinzi Stars.
Despite delivering solid performances, neither will be retained, indicating a shift in the club’s plans for the goalkeeping department.
The other released players include Daniel Odhiambo (formerly Kibera Black Stars), Starlon Odhiambo, Henry Oballa, and Godfrey Rabar. All eight exits follow the expiry of their contracts.
In the statement, Mathare United expressed gratitude to the departing players for their contributions and wished them well in their future endeavors.
With the clear-out now official, the club is expected to pursue reinforcements actively. The Slum Boys concluded the 2024/25 season with 42 points from 34 matches, and with preparations now underway, the focus shifts to building a squad capable of challenging higher up the table.
