Fatigue hurting Shujaa, says Okwemba ahead of Singapore 7s

Koyonzo High School rugby head coach Eliud Okwemba says fatigue might have contributed to the national sevens team, Shujaa, failing to meet their target of finishing in the top eight in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
Okwemba said many of the Shujaa players are also representing their clubs in the Kenya Cup, thus finding not enough time to rest in between the Cup and the Series.
“Most of these top players for Shujaa also command first team places in their clubs so with matches every weekend and the series also on the players will definitely be fatigued,” said Okwemba.
At the Singapore Sevens, Shujaa are pooled alongside Ireland and Olympics reigning champions France, and despite the herculean task ahead, Okwemba has backed them to qualify for the semi-finals by winning the two games on Saturday morning.
“They are teams that we have beaten before all we need is to score as many tries as possible and defend well as a unite that will help in qualifying for the semis,” he added.
The veteran tactician went on to warn Shujaa against any complacency if they have to reach the semis in Singapore.
“Our main problem this season has been blowing hot and cold. Some series the team performs very well in others very poorly not because they are playing badly but just simple mistakes that are costly to the team and results,” he stated.
The Kevin Wambua-coached side fell short in a closely contested clash against South Africa, losing 19-17 to finish 10th at the Hong Kong Sevens held at Kai Tak Stadium last Sunday.
Shujaa failed to make it to the main cup quarters after falling narrowly to both Great Britain and France, despite an inspiring start, beating Spain 19-0 in the pool matches.
