Former Kenyan international and CAF instructor Fred Serenge has urged the Ministry of Sports to enhance support for grassroots talent development.

Serenge highlighted that many promising athletes are lost during the transition from secondary school to university due to inadequate technical support and insufficient facilities.

He acknowledged the strides made by the ministry in sports development but pointed out critical gaps that need addressing.

“The ministry has invested appropriately, and as a country, we are on the right path. We should soon begin reaping the benefits of these initiatives,” said Serenge.

“However, moving forward, I would advise the ministry to ensure players are fully equipped. You cannot impart knowledge effectively to someone who lacks the right tools.”

He emphasized the importance of providing basic football equipment, especially for young players.

“While we have balls, cones, and markers, many kids lack essential items like football boots, which are the main tools in the game,” he added.

Serenge’s call underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to nurturing young talent.

Beyond infrastructure and coaching, equipping players with the necessary gear could help them excel and transition smoothly through different stages of their careers.

With proper investment in grassroots talent, Kenya could strengthen its sports development pipeline and produce world-class athletes in the future.
