The Esalwa Secondary School boys’
rugby team, led by head coach Vincent Wetindi, is setting its sights on the
county title in this year’s competitions.
As the Emuhaya Sub-County Secondary
School Games head to Ebunangwe Boys’ grounds next weekend, Wetindi is
optimistic that Esalwa can overcome their archrivals, Emusire Boys, to advance
as Emuhaya champions and compete at the Vihiga County level.
“Last year's competition was fair.
We managed to beat Emusire, but Ebusiloli was too strong for us. Eventually, we
proceeded to the county level as runners-up. This time, however, I want us to
emerge as champions so that we can confidently compete for a spot in the
Western Region Championships,” Wetindi said.
“I understand it’s a tough
challenge, but since it remains our goal, we have no choice but to pursue it,”
he added, as Esalwa prepared to face Ebusiloli, Ebunangwe, and Emusire, the
only schools fielding teams for the Rugby 15s tournament at Ebunangwe grounds.
However, Wetindi acknowledges that
success in such competitions requires not only training but also proper
facilities.
He is now calling on Esalwa rugby
fans and well-wishers to support the team in giving their competitors a run for
their money this year.
“The school management has helped us
acquire jerseys, but we lack a gym and the technological resources needed to
keep our players updated on modern rugby trends by learning from established
teams worldwide,” he lamented.
Meanwhile, Emuhaya Secondary Schools
Sports Association chairman Tom Justus Aura confirmed that preparations are
complete for students to compete in rugby, basketball (5x5), handball, and
athletics.
“Esalwa, Emusire, Ebunangwe, and
Esibila secondary schools will present boys’ teams in basketball 5x5,” Aura
said.
